What you keep, what you grant Mimir, and what happens if Mimir ever earns money from what you write.

You keep your copyright

You wrote it; it stays yours. Publishing on Mimir does not transfer ownership.

What you grant Mimir

By publishing a note you grant Mimir a worldwide, non-exclusive, irrevocable, sublicensable and transferable license to host, display, adapt, translate, distribute, and make commercial use of your contributions — including selling or licensing access to them, and licensing them to third parties. You confirm the work is yours to give.

Parts of that are worth reading twice:

Non-exclusive

The note is still yours to publish anywhere else you like. Granting this to Mimir takes nothing away from you.

Adapt

Notes are collaboratively edited. Someone else will rewrite your sentences, split your note, or fold it into another. That is the point of a shared graph, and this clause is what makes it possible.

Irrevocable

You can delete a note, but you cannot withdraw the license for copies already distributed. Publish accordingly.

No payment obligation

The license itself does not oblige us to pay you. That is separate from the monetization programme below, which is a commitment we are making on top of it — not something this clause grants you.

What readers may do

Read. Mimir’s content is not currently released under an open license — it is © its contributors, free to read. If that ever changes, it will be announced here first.

This is also why the writing policy forbids importing text from Wikipedia or other share-alike sources: their license would attach to the note and to everything built on it.

If Mimir ever goes freemium

Mimir is free today. If we ever introduce a freemium model — some content behind a subscription — we will open a monetization programme for writers, the way YouTube did. Writing here is not unpaid labour for someone else to sell.

It pays out of subscription revenue, by a published formula. It is not a claim on individual sales — there is no “revenue from your note” to divide, because a subscriber pays for access to the graph, not for note #4,182. Payment would work the way it works everywhere it works: eligibility, a threshold, and a formula, with separate terms for a note’s author and for the people who improved it.

Not everyone will qualify. There will be a bar to clear, and not every note will qualify even for writers who clear it. We would rather say that now than let you assume otherwise.

No such programme exists yet, and nothing here promises a rate, a threshold, or a date. Three things we do commit to:

If we launch a paid tier, the programme happens. Not “maybe”.
It covers what you have already written, not only work published after it starts.
The full terms — who qualifies, what share, how it splits — are published on this page before the paid tier launches.

Aura is not money

Aura measures what you have given the graph. It is reputation, not currency, and it does not convert to payment. If that ever changes, it will be announced here before it takes effect.
